I squirm a little whenever I hear someone say “Cinema is a visual medium”. Cinema is an Audio-Visual Medium. Sound Design in itself is a distinct science in the art that is cinema. Even though there are a few Indian films of late, which have used it effectively, rarely does it get acknowledged. The popular notion, that the sound of the footsteps when a character walks in the film, or that of glass-ware shattering etc. is sound design, is only but partially true. While the fact of the matter is, it is just the primary stage of Sound Design. All our experiences are catered to us by the five senses we possess. A film can really influence us through our eyes and our ears, (for now that is). A film is nothing but the series of temporary experiences that these two senses create within us. While a few films have really powerful visuals, there are a few others which can move the audience just with their sound. But only a film with the perfect combination of these two can deliver a wholesome experience. Since the perfect combination evokes a varied range of emotions of varying intensities, a director uses the influence of each medium in the combination as required, to express the emotion that needs to be conveyed.
