Aesthetics & Cinema

What is the definition of “Aesthetics”? On introspection, it seems that Perception, Empathy and Experience put together is what could be understood as “Aesthetics.” Hence aesthetics is used not just to grasp and experience an art-form, but also to create it. In this context, the very ability to appreciate art is made possible by aesthetics. The greater part of an artist’s expression of his or her socio-political stance is formed by his or her background. The knowledge of the boundaries and ideological stance specific to that particular art-form helps in understanding and appreciating that art-form better. When it comes to the roles played by ‘The First Act’ in the screen-play of a film, in addition to introducing the plot and the characters of the film, it also introduces the aesthetic frame-work of the film. In a way, it explains the perspective and the direction from which the plot is being explored. The aesthetics could be derived from events within the film, or the socio-political events of the time. As the audience starts taking in the experience of a film, the film in turn makes the audience aware of this background and guides them through the plot. Like any other art-form, the audience responds to the politics of a film, as per their individual opinions and experiences while discovering themselves through the aesthetics of the film.
