We had the fortune of spending a week’s time with Walter Murch, an American Editor & Sound Designer. He is a two-time Oscar winner, having worked on projects like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The English Patient etc. He was at our film school to teach us. He was accompanied by his wife Aggie Murch. Though the couple was quite elder to us they mingled really well with us. We had organised a small party in their honour. Amidst the banter during the party, we asked Mrs Aggie what her hobbies were. She took out a small sound recorder from her purse. Mr & Mrs Murch loved travelling around the world. Mrs Aggie would record the unique sounds of every place she visited. Just like tourists like to photograph their memories, she just recorded them! She had curated an extensive library of sounds during her lifetime. Since sound has the virtue of being formless, which the photographs lack, the joy of its collection is unique and special at the same time. As film buffs, paying more attention to the sounds around us will definitely increase our awareness of the world we live in.
