A very common notion that a lot of people have is that, while Movies are pure imagination far from reality, Documentaries represent the reality. But then, anything that is shot on a camera, will have a perspective and perspectives are true, only for a group of people who can relate to it. So even the “reality” depicted by a documentary is relative. In that case what is reality in cinema? Or does it even exist? As I have come to learn, reality in a film is limited only to the world created by its director. This world is different for every Director and Screen-writer. For instance, in a world that you create as a director, if gravity does not exist, it is the reality for every character, in that world. This is the physical aspect of reality. Similarly, in the world that you create, if everyone is naked, anyone who is clothed will be thought to be out of his mind. This explains the mental notion of reality. Now, if within the boundaries of the world that you created, people of a particular sect, attack people belonging to another sect, it is, but the political stance of that particular world, that particular film in this scenario. A director’s understanding of reality is exhibited through his or her films. Hence, as a Director, as a Screen-writer it is important to ensure that their reality is inline with the greater good. The true power of art is in the belief of greater good. Let this be the underlying thought in the process of making and watching films.
